Band and Chorus Impressive at Disney (AngelFire Article)
The band and chorus was proud to represent Haddam-Killingworth High School in Walt Disney World Florida this past February [2001] vacation.
A combination of 160 musicians and singers flew to Florida February 15, for 4 days and 3 nights out of Bradley and Providence airports. They were featured to perform at the Magic Kingdom and Epcot Center in Disney World. The first day was spent at MGM studios. Rehearsals followed back at the hotel to perform for the performance the next day.
The Concert band led by Timothy D'Amato kicked off the performances at Epcot Center on the second day of arrival. The 89-member band played for 20 minutes of music including the theme from James Bond, a medley from Guys and Dolls, Ragtime selections, and the Cheerio March.
"I was extremely pleased with the performances by all of our groups. The trip was a very rewarding experience for everyone involved. The student musicians should be very proud of their accomplishments." stated Timothy D'Amato.
The 78-member chorus led by Kristine Pekar followed the concert band at Epcot Center. They sang a variety of songs including Too Darn Hot, I hear America Singing, Shenandoah, Don't Let the Harvest, and Turn the World Around.
"I felt happy when families would stop and listen to our performances." said Kim Kolpak, a chorus member. The third day at The Magic Kingdom the 25 member Jazz Band, also led by Timothy D'Amato performed to a large crowd. Their selections included; Tenor Madness, Night Train, You've Changed, I Wanna Be Like You, and What is Hip. Featured soloists in the Jazz Band were Pat Campagnano, Lyle Townsend,
Geoff Riggio, and Derrick Schull.
"It was the most fun I've had in 4 years!" exclaimed Dave Winokur, a Concert and Jazz Band member.
The chamber choir performed last but certainly not least. Kristine Pekar and her 23 singers rose from the floor of the Magic Kingdom's rising floor stage Their program included I'm a train, Tuxedo Junction, Duerme, Son de Camaguey, Lullaby, and Take the A Train.
"Both choral groups did wonderfully and exceeded my expectations" Stated Pekar.
The trip concluded with a day at Disney's Animal Kingdom and the flight back home. It was an experience everyone will remember forever.
"It was fun, it's something you can only do once in a lifetime which made it feel really special," said Lilly Goldberg, a Concert Band member.
