Some people may not think 1917 was a very significant year. Woodrow Wilson was in the middle of his second term, World War I would rage another year and cars were funny looking. Yet jazz musicians should perk up at the mention of the year 1917 for it was the first time a jazz recording was ever made. Of more
esoteric interest, it was also the year the U.S. Navy would shut down the "red light" district in New Orleans, causing the migration of the traditional jazz sounds from there across the country. Thus the 1917 Jazz Band takes their name from the year that meant so much. The 1917 Band produces some of the most exciting traditional jazz and blues anywhere today. Audiences of all ages are drawn in by the group's enthusiastic approach to the music and its compelling rhythmic drive. Their exuberant music can clearly be traced to its early jazz roots, while simultaneously establishing
itself as a vital part of today's current jazz scene.
